The life of legendary country singer Patsy Cline is powerfully brought to the screen. From her climb to fame and fortune, through her passionate and turbulent marriage, this is the unforgettable story of the tragically short lived performer. She wasn't a beauty queen, but country-music star Patsy Cline's voice was a thing of wonder: full-bodied, aching and dreamy at the same time. She came by the torchy emotions in her songs honestly, as shown in this biopic directed by Karel Reisz, rising from poor surroundi! ngs, literally forcing her talent on the Nashville establishment, all the while trying to survive an abusive marriage to a drinker. Though the script by Robert Getchell is standard Hollywood biography, the movie is more than watchable, thanks to a bone-deep performance by the always astonishing Jessica Lange and the counterpoint by Ed Harris as her loving but unreliable husband. The soundtrack features a basketful of Cline's hits, which Lange convincingly lip-synchs. --Marshall FineFRANCES - DVD MovieJessica Lange gives a career performance in a role she was born to play: the talented and troubled Frances Farmer. Farmer's awful trajectory travels from bright Seattle girl to 1930s Hollywood starlet to degraded (eventually lobotomized) mental patient. Lange, who has the blond, clean look of Farmer's heyday, goes into these places with the fierce abandon of a true believer. Her performance, the lush John Barry score, and the period re-creation are all worth applauding; ! almost everything else fails. Everyone except Farmer is grotes! quely ca ricatured to fit the movie's thesis, which is that if you are intelligent and nonconformist, the system will resolutely destroy you. (The medical establishment is evil incarnate.) This simple conclusion seems inadequate and disrespectful of Frances Farmer's tragic problems. For a radiant glimpse of what the real Farmer had to offer, see Howard Hawks's Come and Get It, which bristles with excitement over a new discovery. --Robert HortonJessica Lange and Sam Shepard are Jewell and Gil Ivy. If you loved THE WIZARD OF OZ, you'll love accompanying Dorothy on this second thrilling adventure based on L. Frank Baum's "Oz" books! Dorothy finds herself back in the land of her dreams ... and makes delightful new friends (like Tik Tok, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the Gump) ... and dangerous new enemies (the creepy Wheelers, the head-hunting Princess Mombi, and the evil Nome King). With every twist in the yellow brick road, you'll find awesome new surprises and special effects that will astound you!You don't foo! l with Mother Nature, spit into the wind, remake Casablanca, or trash the land of Oz. Perhaps that is why the 1985 live-action sequel split critics and audiences alike. The 1939 classic musical is so beloved that it's almost impossible to imagine seeing Dorothy in shock therapy, a crumbled yellow brick road, the ruins of Emerald City, and the Tin Man turned into stone. But L. Frank Baum, the author of the original Oz books, portrayed just that with his continuing stories of Dorothy. When you get by these tough facts, the film version is solid entertainment for the over-7 set.

Dorothy (a 10-year-old Fairuza Balk in her debut) is back in Kansas, where Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) is at the end of her rope: her niece is not sleeping and going on about a place called Oz. Therapy may be the answer, but luckily the scary clinic goes dark before Dorothy can be, er, cured (but the lead-up will scare the munchkins out of most kids). She wakes up in the land of Oz, now i! n tatters, and searches for its king, the Scarecrow. A new set! of frie nds, including a tin soldier, a talking chicken, and a pumpkin man, help her against new villains, including Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh)--complete with a set of detachable heads--and the evil Nome King (Nicol Williamson with a great assist from Will Vinton's Claymation). The sole directorial effort of Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch is stuffed with marvelous effects that foreshadow later works by Tim Burton and the Henson non-Muppet films. --Doug Thomas

Jagged Little Pill

  • TESTED
Japanese Version featuring a Bonus Track: Perfect (Acoustic Version)Her intensely personal lyrics grabbed the headlines, but the bravest departure here is the way Morissette's unique vocals stand naked in the mix--a technique that drives home the painful honesty of tracks like "Right Through You," "Forgiven," and "All I Really Want." Sheryl Crow or an earthier Tori Amos are fair analogies, but Morissette is a genuine original with a rare ability to make listeners care, think, and question. --Jeff Bateman

LOST & DELIRIOUS - DVD MovieIn a nightclub, four hard-core party girls ambush an unsuspecting girl in a bathroom and beat her to a pulp. When the dead girl shows up on the news, the group's leader, Love vanishes, presumably murdered. The three remaining girls, unclear of what has happened to Love, begin to distort the truth, shifting the blame from one to the other, with each determined to be the one who makes it out of this tangled web of deceit and paranoia ! alive.STARDOM - DVD MovieThis witty and skillful examination of contemporary celebrity depicts a Canadian girl's rise from teen hockey player to international supermodel, with a sharp, satirical eye at every step along the way. The rise and fall of Tina (real-life model Jessica Parƃ©) is depicted through a cunning intersplicing of fake talk shows, local and international news programs, documentary footage, rock videos, and fashion travelogues. Yet in the process, director Denys Arcand (Jesus of Montreal, Love and Human Remains) still creates characters that--though comic and exaggerated--are sneakily real, including an obsessive restaurateur (Dan Aykroyd), a snobbish ambassador (Frank Langella), and an aloof, calculating agent (Thomas Gibson). Along with well-chosen topical references (from Bret Easton Ellis to Tiger Woods), the movie features many characters suspiciously close to real celebrities, particularly a photographer/documentarian with a marked resemb! lance to Bruce Weber. Stardom is smart, funny, and ulti! mately s ympathetic. --Bret FetzerPlease note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Dorozowsky was a wrestling fan growing up and, during interviews, recalls watching his first wrestling match with his father, a steel cage match between the Big Boss Man and then WWF World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan on the May 27, 1989 edition of Saturday Night's Main Event. He also attended an independent wrestling event several years later which was raising money for the "Telethon Of Stars" charity.
