THIRST - DVD MovieThe Pleasure Drivers lays out three separate interconnected stories involving an adulterous therapist, a young sociopath call girl, a vicious lesbian hit woman, a white trash kidnapper, and a brain-damaged ex-cult guru. Described as funny, sexy, edgy and dangerous, The Pleasure Drivers energetically explores the dark side of Los Angeles and how it gleefully relates to the gasoline of libido.

Features: Wide Screen PresentationConsidering that Andrzej Sekula, director of The Pleasure Drivers, was Quentin Tarantino's cinematographer on Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, it's not too surprising that this 2005 film sometimes echoes the latter's approach. Indeed, were it not for the fact that the story makes little sense, the dialog! ue isn't funny, the characters are poorly drawn, and the acting is almost uniformly sub-par, you might think this was the work of Tarantino himself. As it is, Sekula has made a movie that clearly values style over substance, achieving a modicum of the former and almost none of the latter. Screenwriter Adam Haynes' story revolves primarily around a low-life "caregiver" (Lauren Holly) tending to a mentally unstable young man (Angelo Spizzirri) whose father, some kind of cult leader, has been less than forthcoming with the financial support she depends on; her solution is to kidnap the kid's equally weird sister (Steffany Huckaby). Meanwhile, a full-of-himself professor-therapist (Angus MacFadyen) who constantly whispers Freudian drivel into a tape recorder finds himself rejected by his wife and glommed on to by an oversexed student (Lacy Chabert). These folks, along with "a vicious lesbian hit woman" (no, really), come together somewhere in the Southern California desert, whe! re the film mercifully comes to a close. Sekula favors moody l! ighting and odd camera angles, the better to illuminate a cast of scenery-chewing, unlikable characters drifting through a tale that will intrigue almost no one. The cover blurb notes that The Pleasure Drivers has been "described as funny, sexy, edgy and dangerous." Maybe so, but that description must have come from someone who didn't actually see it. --Sam GrahamBE MY BABY - DVD MovieJANUARY 2007 ISSUE OF MAXIM MAGAZINE. And because it's put to the audience by the country singer Travis Tritt, it'll be that much more compelling for some viewers. "How did Christmas carols come to be?" asks the twangy crooner, disguised as a sleighbell-bejeweled cartoon reindeer who moonlights as a Christmas-special host. Don't sweat it if you're stumped--who would have guessed that, instead of spiraling from age-old spirituals, it all started with three hapless orphans in the tiny, make-believe town of Harmony? Ollie, Ted, and Cindy, down on themselves for forever being on the receiving end of Christmas exchanges, are intent on giving something back to their harried but good-hearted fellow townspeople--but what, given their nearly resourceless scenario? Cindy taps out a tune on a found xylophone, her two compatriots noodle ! around with some accidental lyrics, and voilà--their gift is a wrap. Folks, at first reluctantly, forget about the holiday frenzy and, through the magic of music, let the true spirit of the season flood in. From the super-stoic Vulcan Lt. Saavik in Star Trek II, to the super-sexy and neurotic barkeeper Rebecca Howe on Cheers, to her real-life role as an overweight and aging actress trying to revive her Hollywood career, Kirstie Alley has been through it all. With unprecedented access into Kirstie's world, A&E follows the triumphs and tribulations of the actress, author, inventor, and mother as she navigates constant media scrutiny, an ongoing battle with weight loss, single parenthood, the reinvention of her career and a return to the dating scene. From the h! ustle and bustle of Los Angeles to the peaceful seclusion of her home in Wichita, Kansas, Kirstie Alley's Big Life provides an unabashed look into Kirstie's world as the five-foot-eight firecracker sets out to lose 90 pounds - all while producing a feature film, patenting multiple inventions, launching a weight-loss program and raising her two teenage children: Lillie, who dreams of becoming a designer, and True, an aspiring musician. With the help of her family and friends, including a sassy live-in assistant, a recruited chubby-buddy, and a host of fellow celebrities, Kirstie is ready to reclaim her life. Will she get the last laugh?

FOR RICHER OR POORER - DVD MovieTim Allen and Kirstie Alley are New York scammers on the lam from the IRS--they got framed by their slimy accountant, Wayne Knight of Seinfeld--so they hide out as fake Amish f! armers in Intercourse, Pennsylvania. As parodies of Witness! go, For Richer or Poorer can't compete with the Woody Harrelson-Bill Murray flick Kingpin, by the creators of Dumb & Dumber. Allen and Alley are directed by the creator of McHale's Navy. But wait, come back! The true test of talent is a capacity to romp right through weak material, and while this story is hopelessly lame and formulaic, Allen and Alley are credible candidates for the clown prince and princess of broad TV comedy. When somebody wonders how come alleged Amish guy Tim Allen has no beard, Kirstie says, "Lice." Of course, his face has no lice on it either, so Kirstie adds, "Minute lice!" --Tim AppeloLoosely based on Kirstie Alley's real life struggles, this unscripted reality /comedy hybrid follows a semi-fictional film and TV star, in an ongoing attempt to find work and love in the cruel environment of Hollywood. Kirstie comically contends with an unforgiving public and media in the wake of her struggles with weight.PRINCE OF BEL AI! R - DVD MovieSalem, Massachusetts. A small townâ€"with no clear governing bodyâ€"became embroiled in a scandal that forever stands as one of the darkest chapters in American history. For those accused of witchcraft by their neighbors and friends, there was little chance of clearing their names; the mass paranoia that ravaged through the community took the lives of 19 innocent men and women. With an all-star cast of Kirstie Alley, Rebecca De Mornay, Kristin Booth, Shirley MacLaine, Peter Ustinov and Alan Bates, Salem Witch Trials dramatically revisits 1692 colonial America and the haunting legacy it holds.America's real-life answer to Bridget Jones! Kirstie Alley has captured our hearts on screen and now she is poised to do it again in print as she laughingly explores our obsession with fat, food, love, sex, beauty and weight loss. "Dear Diary, Decided to write book today. Thought am good writer, am smart gal, have interesting sex-filled (lie) life. Thou! ght can write about men, life, love, family, food, sex and fat! assednes s. Thought can share stories with tiny-butted and big-butted alike. Can tell people why fat, why (was) cokehead, why traffic jams and herbal laxatives don't mix, and why suede pants and sprinklers have same rule...More important..can show world how life is beautiful and funny, no matter size of butt."The increasing girth of Kirstie Alley's rear end has figured prominently (pun intended) on many a tabloid cover in recent years. At the peak of her career ("Cheers"), of course, her butt was indeed at its smallest. It's no surprise that she therefore sums up her life philosophy this way: one's level of happiness tends to be inversely proportional to the size of one's posterior.

With extremely salty language on par with what you might hear in a 50 Cent song, Alley has penned a self-deprecating Hollywood tell-all in the disguise of "note-to-self"-style diary entries. With many apologies to Bridget Jones, we learn that Alley is a former cocaine addict who once participated i! n the snorting of a six-foot-long trail of powder at a party. (She's says she's currently a Scientologist and credits L. Ron Hubbard with curing her of her narcotic addiction, as well as her issues with food.) We also learn--for better or worse--that she has the hots for John Travolta, Kid Rock, and Ben Affleck, and that she blames her weight gain for a super-extended period of unplanned celibacy.

As crass as she is (she kisses and tells, even including the sordid details of her losing her virginity in the front seat of a Chevy Impala), it's hard not to feel sympathetic for Alley. She admits that following a miscarriage in her third month of pregnancy and subsequent diagnosis of infertilityâ€"which were also broadcast in the tabloids--her weight started ballooning. And as much as she dishes about Hollywood actors such as Tim Matheson (of Animal House fame), she has the decency to leave Parker Stevenson, her ex-husband and father of their two adopted children! , out of the gossiping. Even so, overall, this feels like a st! rangely extended endorsement of Dianetics. --Erica JorgensenKirstie Alley ( Cheers ) knocks 'em deadliterallyand then becomes hysterically hysterical in this laugh-out-loud funny comedy which co-stars Bill Pullman (Independence Day), Carrie Fisher (When Harry Met Sally), Jami Gertz ( Ally McBeal ), Scott Bakula ( Enterprise ), Sam Elliott (Fatal Beauty) and Ed O'Neill ( Married With Children )! All Marjorie (Alley) ever wanted was to become a writer: like Sylvia Plath...only happy. But she put her dream aside to marry a doctor (Bakula)...before discovering that he has no bedside manner! Unhappy, unfulfilled and decidedly unsatisfied, she attempts to find bliss in a hotel room with a handsome stranger. But when the man she checks in with checks out for goodleaving behind only a smiling corpse and a shocking identity Marjorie will have to cover up the body and the affair...or she may as well write off the rest ofher life!Carl Reiner, who paired with Steve Martin in ! The Jerk, takes another rewarding gamble in Sibling Rivalry, matching comic actress Kirstie Alley with a screwball tale of mistaken identities, three sets of siblings, and a pesky corpse. Alley plays a neglected wife encouraged by her sister (Jami Gertz) to have a fling; when she does precisely that with a handsome stranger (Sam Elliott), he not only dies in bed but turns out to be a long-lost brother-in-law. Further complicating matters is a salesman (Bill Pullman) who thinks he inadvertently killed Elliott's character, plus a lot of doctor jokes (Carrie Fisher plays a bullying gynecologist married to a protologist) and a deadpan cop (Ed O'Neill). The screenplay's comic complications take a little too long to reach critical mass, but when they do, Reiner masterfully controls the essential screwball timing and Alley, Pullman, Gertz, and screen veterans John Randolph and Frances Sternhagen thoroughly deliver. --Tom KeoghThis first theatrical outing for t! he ubiquitous Olsen twins is their take on The Parent Trap meet s The Prince and the Pauper. One plays a foster child under the care of a single social worker (Kirstie Alley) whose marital status prevents her from adopting her favorite charge. The other is the neglected daughter of a "bazillionaire" (Steve Guttenberg), who's about to marry a gold-digging socialite (played nastily by Jane Sibbett, Ross's first ex-wife on TV's Friends). The foster kid comes to a charity camp abutting the rich girl's summer estate and--presto--the identical strangers meet, hatch a plan to solve both their dilemmas, and switch identities. Directed by Andy Tennant (Ever After), this PG-rated film features some decent G-rated chemistry between Alley and Guttenberg and surprisingly uncloying performances by Mary-Kate and Ashley. The rating is for mild language. (Ages 5 and up) --Kimberly HeinrichsDonna Selby (Kirstie Alley) and Ricardo Thornton (Delroy Lindo) were two mentally disabled children who were taken from their parents and i! nstitutionalized. Donna was angry and afraid; she hated the heavy medications, uncompassionate staff, and had difficulty coping. Then Donna met cheerful and optimistic Ricardo, who had a calming effect on her. Their friendship blossomed over 20 years. Then they were told that the institution was closing. Patients were re-assigned to other institutions, group homes and apartments. Could Donna and Ricardo survive in the outside world? Would they be able to survive without each other? Follow the quest of this mentally disabled couple to find each other again. Feel their love and determination to fulfill their dreams of getting married, having a child, (forbidden by the Social Services Authorities) and becoming a normal family.Drop Dead Gorgeous reproduction Approx. In 1959 South Korea was mired in poverty. By 1979 it had a powerful industrial economy and a vibrant civil society in the making, which would lead to a democratic breakthrough eight years later. The transformation took place during the years of Park Chung Hee’s presidency. Park seized power in a coup in 1961 and ruled as a virtual dictator until his assassination in October 1979. He is credited with modernizing South Korea, but at a huge political and social cost.

South Korea’s p! olitical landscape under Park defies easy categorization. The state was predatory yet technocratic, reform-minded yet quick to crack down on dissidents in the name of political order. The nation was balanced uneasily between opposition forces calling for democratic reforms and the Park government’s obsession with economic growth. The chaebol (a powerful conglomerate of multinationals based in South Korea) received massive government support to pioneer new growth industries, even as a nationwide campaign of economic shock therapyâ€"interest hikes, devaluation, and wage cutsâ€"met strong public resistance and caused considerable hardship.

This landmark volume examines South Korea’s era of development as a study in the complex politics of modernization. Drawing on an extraordinary range of sources in both English and Korean, these essays recover and contextualize many of the ambiguities in South Korea’s trajectory from poverty to a sustainable high rate of economic! growth.

From the author: Objective: Numer! ous studies on alcoholism treatment have indicated that there ! are many steps the alcoholic must take before he can be alcohol free, and the admission that he is an alcoholic is the first step towards that goal. Ibis study concerns the validation of a 20-item questionnaire, for the objective evaluation of the insight status of alcoholics. Method: Alcoholic men (N = 58) were interviewed by three clinicians, and the decisions of all of the interviewers were concordant in categorizing 44 out of the 58 interviewees into three insight groups: poor, fair and good. Validation of the questionnaire was made against the 44 concordant categorizations. Results: The assessments of the patient's insight state by these two different methods (the interview results and the scores of this scale) were found to be highly and significantly correlated (r = .79, p [is less than] .001). Conclusions: This scale may be useful for qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the insight of alcoholics, and may provide fundamental information in establishing different therap! eutic strategies based on different insight states of the alcoholics in the recovery process. (J. Stud. Alcohol 59: 52-55, 1998)

From the supplier: Studies on alcoholism indicate that alcoholics should take many steps to be alcohol free. The first step towards that goal is the admission of being an alcoholic. Others phases of recovery are transition, early recovery, and ongoing recovery. These areas enable researchers to establish therapeutic strategies and develop treatments that may not be currently available.

ALICE is an American Law student in London. Knocked down by a black cab, she wakes with amnesia in a world that's a million miles from home Wonderland. We follow her adventures as she is dragged through an underworld filled with twisted individuals and the lowest low-lifes by the enigmatic cab-driver WHITEY (The White Rabbit). She needs to find out who she is, where she's from, and use what wits she has left to get back home in one piece.Lewis Carroll's 19th-century heroine undergoes a 21st-century metamorp! hosis in the feverish, fast-paced Malice in Wonderland. Lost's leggy Maggie Grace plays Alice Dodgson, an American heiress living in London. As the action begins, she's fleeing from a couple of unidentified assailants when she runs into Danny Dyer's cockney cabby, Whitey, who gives her a ride (a rabbit's foot dangles from his rear-view mirror). Suffering from amnesia, she decides to accompany him to Mob boss Harry Hunt's big party, but first Whitey has to get Hunt a present (Inspector Lynley's Nathaniel Parker plays the urbane ex-con). During their travels, Alice pops a couple of Whitey's consciousness-altering pills and tangles with a parade of peculiar characters, from a diminutive purse snatcher with an identical twin to a sharp-dressed disc jockey with magical powers. When she loses track of Whitey, an agoraphobic duchess (Rosemary and Thyme's Pam Ferris) lends her a hand. Meanwhile, Alice's pampered past comes rushing back in fits and spurts! . Soon she's wondering if her chauffeur-turned-protector reall! y likes her or whether he's just after the reward money. Like Terry Gilliam with attention deficit disorder, Simon Fellows directs with speed and flair--tilted angles, color filters, and surrealistic flourishes--but Malice sometimes looks more like a music video than a proper movie. Written by Jayson Rothwell, his version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland adds naughty words, gunplay, and prostitutes ("tarts"), which makes it less suitable for minors than the Tim Burton version, but the unlikely romance is a sweet touch. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
